I enjoy doing:
  • Therapy (ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, self-esteem, relationships, grief etc.)
  • Assessments (school readiness, scholastic, learning barriers, subject choices and career choices)
  • Guidance regarding academic skills, i.e., study methods, planning and goal-setting.
  • Guidance regarding self-care, i.e., the importance of self-care and the permission to allow yourself to take care of yourself and to tune into when you need to take care of yourself despite the demands of work and family, setting healthy boundaries etc.
  • Talks and workshops on various topics for learners, teachers and parents.

Individual Therapy
Past and present factors that contribute to emotional difficulties are explored through therapy. Challenges such as ADHD, depression, anxiety, trauma, self-esteem, relationships, grief and many more are addressed in a safe environment where a client can express their inner-most emotions and difficulties.

Self-care and setting healthy boundaries are very important to prevent burnout in our current society. Demands of school and the workplace are increasing and can have a direct impact on mental health. Determined by the client’s needs, I provide guidance with study methods, planning skills and specific self-care techniques.

My therapeutic approach incorporates gestalt play therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), BrainWorking® Recursive Therapy (BWRT) and Tension & Trauma Release Exercises (TRE). I also incorporate other assessment tools and techniques to provide support.

Scholastic Assessments

Scholastic assessments determine a child’s academic and emotional functioning with the goal to establish effective intervention and to ensure that he or she achieves according to their full potential. These assessments include:

  • School readiness: to determine whether a child is academically and emotionally ready to enter formal schooling.
  • Psycho-educational: to determine a child’s strengths and weaknesses and to ensure that they achieve academically according to their ability.
  • Learning barriers: to determine specific learning difficulties that prevent a child from reaching their full potential.

Assessment Accommodations

Individuals with specific learning difficulties may need adjustments in the manner that their academic skills are formally assessed, i.e., tests, examinations, orals etc. The purpose of assessment accommodations is to ensure that the individual can achieve to their full potential whilst taking their specific barriers into consideration. An assessment is required to determine what specific accommodations need to be implemented in the school environment according to the individual learner’s needs.

I administer these assessments for both the CAPS and the IEB curriculum.

Subject Choices
Selecting the correct subjects for Grade 10 and beyond is very important. The wrong choices can have a devastating effect on the young person, not only on an academic level, but also on an emotional level and effect self-esteem.

Career Choices
With so many career paths available today, a sense of being overwhelmed is not uncommon. Finding the most suitable study direction or employment path after school is one of the most important decisions young adults have to make in their lives. This is coupled with selecting the right subject choices at the start of Grade 10.

Parent Guidance
It takes a team effort to provide the best support to a child. Guidance are provided to parents on how to best support their child academically, emotionally and mentally. Guidance can be provided as part of the therapeutic process, an outcome of an assessment or to address day-to-day aspects such as parent-child communication.
