Lianie Jacobs

I am the youngest of four children and grew up on a farm in the Great Karoo. I cherish my family, friends and my dog. My ‘happy place’ is the bushveld and being close to wild life and nature.

I have always wanted to pursue a career where I can help and make a positive difference in peoples’, especially children’s, lives. I value that every individual has a choice and the ability to take responsibility for their own lives.

My journey started in 2004 when I enrolled at Stellenbosch University to complete a BSc in Human Life Sciences degree. I quickly realised that it was not my calling and in 2005 my true journey started when I changed my study program and completed my bachelor’s degree in educational psychology in 2008. I started my teaching career at a girls’ school in Newlands, Cape Town, where I taught Natural Sciences, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences. In 2012 I relocated to Somerset West where I continued with teaching and part-time counselling whilst completing my post-graduate studies in psychology.

I completed my internship partially at Goeie Hoop Psychological Services, a non-profit organisation in Stellenbosch, where I was part of a multi-disciplinary team serving the children, parents and teachers from low-income areas and partially at Parel Vallei High School in Somerset West. My learning experience during this time was of immense value as I gained knowledge and experience regarding the different challenges people face associated with the public as well as semi-private sector.

After graduating with a master’s degree in educational psychology cum laude in 2014 I started my working career as the resident educational psychologist at Parel Vallei High School. Working closely with teachers and being actively involved in the school curriculum has provided me with vast insight into the academic expectations that learners and teachers face daily. It has also provided me with the necessary knowledge on departmental policies and processes which enables me to provide support to learners and parents.

In 2017 I decided to enter private practice part-time.

My approach aims at assisting and empowering the individual to adjust, develop and grow in the areas of the self, relationships as well as academically and in this way becoming more their true self. I do believe that it takes a team effort and strive to work closely with the child, parents, teachers and other relevant role players. .
